Kansas Recognizes June as Family Reunification Month: “The Heart of Home”

KANSAS — This June, TFI Family Services (TFI) joins partners across the state in recognizing Family Reunification Month, celebrating the resilience of families and the power of connection through this year’s theme,“The Heart of Home.”

Family reunification is at the core of child welfare, supporting parents and caregivers as they build safe, stable environments so children can return home when possible. Behind every successful reunification is a story of perseverance, healing and hope.

One Kansas family’s journey reflects that heart. After a period of separation, a parent committed to meeting every requirement, attending parenting classes, maintaining stable employment and showing up consistently for their child. Case managers, foster parents and community supports worked alongside them, creating a bridge back home. Today, that child is reunited with their parent, thriving in a safe, stable environment surrounded by love.

“Reunification doesn’t happen by chance. It happens through commitment, accountability and a network of people who believe families can succeed,” said Tabitha Gibson, Senior Vice President of Permanency. “When we invest in families and give them the tools they need, we’re not just bringing children home—we’re strengthening entire communities.”

In Fiscal Year 2025, TFI’s Kansas Case Management program helped facilitate 321 reunifications of children with their families, reflecting a continued focus on helping families heal and stay together whenever it is safe to do so.

While these outcomes are worth celebrating, the work is far from finished.

Reunification often relies on foster parents who are willing to support not only the child in their care, but also the child’s family. Foster families play a critical role in maintaining connections, encouraging relationships and helping ease the transition home.

TFI is calling on Kansas residents to step forward and become foster parents who support reunification. These caregivers are essential partners in helping families rebuild and ensuring children experience stability, even during difficult times.

“Supporting reunification means understanding that your role is part of something bigger,” Gibson added. “It’s about helping a child return home stronger, and knowing you played a role in that journey.”
