Foster kids are no different than other children born to loving families. They love to learn, play and look forward to a future filled with dreams. The major difference is that their maternal parents were unable to care for them at a particular time in their life. Any of us could have been placed in the same situation during the course of our childhood. However, society has chosen to place a stigma on a situation that is beyond their control.
There Are Many Things to Think About
As foster parents, there are many factors that come into play.
- Foster kids are placed in an environment that is unfamiliar to them.
- Children that are removed from home often blame themselves for this turn of events.
- Bullying is commonplace in schools.
A child does not possess the maturity necessary to handle a physical and emotional change quickly. Acting out with silence, rage or dishonesty may be the only way that they can express feelings during a stressful time. As a foster parent, it is your job to keep a foster child safe, healthy and open to their emotional needs.
According to 2017 statistics from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS), over 400,000 children are living in foster care. This is a huge number of children with different backgrounds and problems to cope with.
