If you ever thought to yourself, “I want to be a foster parent” then this is the post for you. Here are four things you must consider before you decide you want to become a foster parent.

Personality

Are you someone who can stay calm in difficult situations? Do you strive to understand all kinds of people? If you answered yes to both questions, then fostering might be the best thing for you. You need to have a calm, understanding and patient personality in order to take on a foster child who might be dealing with special behavioral or other issues. If you feel you have the right personality for the job then becoming a foster parent is a good idea.

Other Children

How will your other children deal with there being a foster child in the home? Make sure you have a chat with your children beforehand so that they are prepared and ready for when the foster child arrives. You want everyone to get along as a family.

Money

Check your bank account and make sure you have enough money to take on another child. You want to be financially secure so that you can provide this new child with everything he or she needs.

Stability

Are you at a stable point in your life right now? Do you feel secure in your job, home, and future? You want to bring a foster child into a stable home where they will get all the love and care that they need without the chaos they might be used to coming from their family of origin. Make sure you are at a stable point within yourself to truly take in a foster child. Be honest with yourself and only take in a child that you feel you can really truly support emotionally at this point in your life.
