This November, TFI recognizes National Adoption Month by celebrating stories of love, resilience and the transformative power of family. One such story is that of Mr. Howell Watson and his grandson. Howell adopted his grandson this past August, who had been in care since 2021. His story highlights the transformative power of patience, support and unconditional love in giving a child a second chance at happiness.
The Rewarding Part of Adopting
Mr. Howell expresses deep pride and fulfillment in witnessing his grandson’s growth after adopting him. “The most rewarding part is how well he’s taken to me,” he shares. “When I first got him, he was having a hard time with his behavior but now seeing him change into a happy, little boy has been incredible.” He emphasizes how showing love and care can completely transform a child’s outlook.
He recounts special morning routines that strengthen their bond: “Every morning, I make it a point to tell him how much I love him and how glad I am to see him. It feels like something he didn’t get much of before. Knowing he’s loved has brought a new light to his personality.”
Rewards & Challenges
Their journey hasn’t been easy or simple, with hurdles such as behavioral challenges and school-related difficulties, but Howell persevered for his grandson, “The first psychiatrist wasn’t the right match for him, but by February, we found another doctor who truly helped,” he shares.
He highlights the value of teamwork and describes how he worked alongside the psychiatrist and pediatrician to develop a plan of action. “By August, I enrolled him in school again and the change was remarkable. From June to August, he blossomed into a different kid—stable and happier.”
He is determined to teach his grandson core virtues like honesty, patience and accountability. “I want him to understand the importance of doing things right the first time,” he says. “Responsibility is a process that requires time and effort to get it right.”
Impact on Family Dynamics
Adoption has strengthened their family bonds. “Before, we weren’t as close,” he admits. “But now, we’re a real family. Seeing him bond with his sister and enjoy simple activities like running in the yard or playing with the pets has been heartwarming.”
He highlights everyday moments that mean the world: “Watching him play and joke around, like pranking me or just sitting on the couch saying, ‘I love you, Pepaw,’ are the memories I cherish most. These little moments remind me why love and patience are so important.”
Advice for People Wanting to Adopt
Throughout this journey, Howell credits community support, especially from TFI, which provided ongoing visits and assistance. “The help from TFI has truly been a lifeline. They came to see me and offered invaluable support.”
He also offers heartfelt advice: “Make sure you let your loved ones know how much they mean to you every day. Celebrate even the smallest achievements—like picking up socks or helping around the house. That kind of positive reinforcement builds confidence and trust.”
He reflects on his decision to adopt his grandson and says he didn’t want to live without him. He says to take a chance because most kids do not have options and you could be theirs.
