Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes sunshine, longer days and endless opportunities to make memories as a family. As you start planning for the warmer months, it’s a great time to brush up on key safety tips to help keep children happy, healthy and safe all season long.
For many families, summer means a change in routine. School’s out, schedules shift and kids spend more time outside. That’s why a little extra planning can go a long way in preventing accidents and keeping everyone safe while still having fun.
Here are a few simple, practical ways to make this summer a safe one:
- Stay Sun Smart. Sunburns can happen faster than you think, especially for little ones. Ensure kids wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapplying every two hours (after swimming or sweating). Don’t forget hats, sunglasses and shade breaks, especially during peak sun hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Hydration is Key. Hot weather means a higher risk of dehydration. Encourage kids to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Keep refillable water bottles handy and offer hydrating snacks like fruit.
- Watch Water Play Closely. Always supervise kids around water, whether it’s the pool, lake or even a backyard sprinkler. Drowning can happen silently and in seconds. Ensure life jackets fit correctly, and teach children basic water safety, even if they aren’t swimmers yet.
- Keep Bugs at Bay. Use insect repellent when spending time outdoors, especially in the evening or near wooded areas. Long sleeves and pants can also help protect against bites. Be sure to check for ticks after outdoor adventures.
- Plan for Heat Safety. Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute. On a warm day, temperatures can rise dangerously fast. When playing outside, look for shaded areas and schedule breaks indoors to cool down.
- Prioritize Playtime Safety. Inspect outdoor play equipment for any loose parts or sharp edges. Helmets are a must when riding bikes or scooters. And remember, safety rules still apply on summer vacation.
With some planning and awareness, summer can be a season full of joy, exploration and togetherness. TFI is here to support families every step of the way, because safe kids and strong families are what it’s all about.
