As we honor National Adoption Month this November, we celebrate stories of love, resilience and the transformative power of family. One such story is that of the Sharp family, a dedicated foster family whose journey began in 2016 and has impacted the lives of more than 100 local Kansas children.
A Heartfelt Adoption Story
Leon and Ryneck Sharp’s journey began with respite care, inspired by community connections and a desire to make a difference. However, their story took a remarkable turn when they welcomed Cameryn into their home. Born in April 2016, Cameryn entered foster care in May 2017. After nearly four years in care, the Sharps officially adopted him in August 2020 at 4 years old. He became a cherished member of their family, and his journey highlights the profound impact that love and stability can make in a child’s life.
His mom Ryneck asked Cameryn, now 9, if he knew what adoption meant and his response was, “I was born in my biological mom’s stomach but born in you and dad’s heart. So, then I got to come be with you guys.”
What Adoption Means — Perspectives from the Sharps
When asked what adoption means to them, the family shared heartfelt reflections. For the parents, Cameryn’s personality, growth and happiness complete their family. Their oldest daughter describes him as funny, friendly and a bright light. Their younger daughter says the best part of adopting Cameron is having a built-in buddy—loud, witty and loved beyond measure. Their words reflect how adoption creates a bond that is rooted in love and connection, transforming their family in profound ways.
Advice for Adoptive Parents
Their story offers valuable insights for those considering adoption. They encourage prospective parents to ask all questions, even the hard ones and to ensure that everyone in the household is on the same page regarding adoption.
“It’s not always going to be smooth – adoption and life may take you down the road with some bumps and hills that you didn’t expect. It will be a learning process as you go – for not only you but for the child as well,” says Mrs. Sharp.
The Sharps emphasize the importance of having a strong support system of family and friends and acknowledge that fostering and adoption require patience and understanding.
“The support, guidance and resources provided by TFI were instrumental in helping to navigate challenges and ensure a smooth process.”
A Message of Hope and Encouragement
As we celebrate this month, let Cameron’s story and the journey of the Sharp family serve as a reminder that every child deserves a loving, supportive family. If you feel called to make a difference, TFI is here to support you every step of the way.
