If you’ve decided to become a foster parent, you’ve made a wonderful decision. You are going to bless the lives of so many children who need a safe and comfortable place to stay. Because you likely want to make your home as inviting as possible, there are certain things that you should do. Here are three tips for preparing your home for foster care.

3 Tips For Preparing Your Home For Foster Care

Declutter

Perhaps the first thing that you want to do is declutter your home. A space that is full of unnecessary clutter is not very welcoming. Go from room to room and get rid of all the clutter that you don’t need and either recycle it or throw it away. If there are important documents and things that you have scattered about your home, place these in filing cabinets that have locks on them. This leaves your home clean and ready for foster care.

Store All Unsafe Items

It is very important that all the unsafe items in your home are put away. This includes things like guns, knives, sharp objects, cleaning supplies, chemicals, etc. You may need to store even more items if you are fostering a young child. This makes your home as safe as possible for your foster child.

Prepare Their Bedroom

One of the most important things that you can do to prepare your home for your foster child is to create a bedroom for them. Make sure that they have a comfortable bed, plenty of space to store their personal items in a dresser and nightstand, a closet with hangers, and decor that you feel is personalized to their taste and style. Personalizing this room to their needs will make it a very warm and inviting space for them and will essentially make it a safe haven for them in your home.
