Fostering a child is one of the most rewarding experiences in which someone can participate. There are many families that are interested in this experience, but are confused as to what the requirements are to become a foster parent. Many people, not knowing some basic requirements, miss out on the opportunity to foster. So, to clear up and possibly help, we’re going to introduce four basic requirements to begin the fostering journey.

Age Restrictions
First, you must be at least 21 years old. For the majority of the population, 21 when many young adults have matured enough to take the responsibility of raising a child. At 21, young adults are in possession of valid drivers licenses, hold a steady full-time job, able to open accounts in their name, and can rent or buy a house. In the United States, 21 is the age when one is considered an adult.
Acceptable Living Conditions
Second, you must have adequate, safe, and clean living conditions. Many children that come into foster care come from homes that are not safe. Some children may have never even had a home to begin with. Children that are in the foster care system need a stable and clean home to feel safe. So many children worry about actually having a home to come to after school and meeting these needs puts one worry of these children to rest. They can wake up each day feeling safe and are able to process and work on any other issues they need to work though.
Take a Class
Third, pass a home assessment and training class. Home assessments include background checks, reference checks, paperwork that is required by the state DHS service, verifications of income, vehicle insurance, and house safety. All of these things are to make sure that you are ready to take an additional child into your home. The class is 27-hours that covers topics from helping your new child overcome past traumas to the child’s health.
Love the Child
Lastly, the most important requirement is patience, understanding, and love. As a foster parent, you understand that many of the children have suffered trauma. Many of the children may be hesitant to trust and lean on you as a parent at first. However, showing up every day with these three things will show these wonderful kids that you are on their side. They can trust you to be there for them.
