Celebrating Child Welfare Workforce Month: Hailey Medina, Youth Care Worker

By September 24, 2025No Comments

September marks Child Welfare Workforce Month, a time to honor the incredible individuals who dedicate their lives to supporting children and families. At Pathway Family Services (PFS), we take this opportunity to celebrate our hardworking team of social workers, case managers, administrators and support staff who work tirelessly to ensure safety, stability and hope for the children in their care. This year, we’re shining a spotlight on Hailey Medina, a remarkable youth care worker whose compassion and dedication inspire us all.

Hailey’s Journey Into Child Welfare

A deep sense of purpose drove Hailey’s path to becoming a youth care worker. Growing up, Hailey always had a natural ability to connect with children, serving as a babysitter and caregiver. However, her decision to join the world of child welfare was influenced by her cousin, who works with TFI and shared stories about the meaningful difference one person can make in a child’s life. Hailey officially joined the TFI team in April 2025, and since then, she’s felt that this is exactly where she’s meant to be. Despite the challenges that come with the job, Hailey describes her experience as simply amazing and deeply fulfilling.

Defining Moments: Building Trust and Connection

Hailey’s work is defined by the relationships she builds with the children in her care. One moment that stands out for her happened during a group activity when kids traced their hands and wrote affirmations. The heartfelt messages the children shared and their affectionate nickname for her, “Ma,” deeply moved her. These moments of connection allow Hailey to approach conflicts with empathy and understanding, creating an environment where children feel heard, valued and supported.

Personal Experiences That Shape Her Work

Although Hailey didn’t experience foster care herself, her personal journey plays a significant role in her approach to child welfare. As the daughter of a military family, Hailey grew up in a stable home but often longed for emotional support. Now, as a mother to a son on the autism spectrum, Hailey draws on her experiences to bring compassion and insight into her work. She’s committed to ensuring that the children she cares for feel empowered and recognized, helping them find the strength to thrive.

Memorable Stories and Lasting Bonds

Hailey has already left a lasting impact in just a few short months. The bonds she’s built with the youth she mentors are a testament to her dedication. Many of the youth she’s worked with continue to stay in touch with her, seeking advice and encouragement long after they’ve left her care. For Hailey, these ongoing relationships are a reminder of the meaningful change she’s helping create daily.

Staying Motivated Through Challenges

Child welfare work is not without its challenges, but Hailey approaches each day with resilience and hope. Her strategy is rooted in kindness and validation, helping the youth in her care see the potential for a brighter future. While some days can be tough, Hailey finds strength in the tangible difference she makes. Her guiding philosophy is simple but powerful: I don’t want to be given up on, and I won’t give up on them.

Though she sometimes wonders if she’s doing enough, the positive feedback she receives from colleagues and the youth she works with reassures her that her love and care are making a real impact. Hailey understands that her work creates ripples of change, helping children feel seen and supported, even if the full effects aren’t immediately visible.

The Broader Impact of Child Welfare Workers

Dedicated professionals like Hailey Medina are the heart of child welfare. Their empathy, hard work and determination create safer, more supportive environments where children and families can thrive. As we celebrate Child Welfare Workforce Month, we’re reminded of the transformative power of these workers’ efforts and the brighter futures they help build every single day.

Let’s take a moment to honor and thank all child welfare professionals for their dedication and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. Together, they are making an incredible difference in our communities.
