Child Welfare Workforce Month, celebrated annually in September, recognizes the invaluable contributions of child welfare professionals, who advocate for the well-being of children and families. Pathway Family Services (PFS) would like to celebrate the dedicated social workers, case managers, administrators and support staff for their tireless commitment to ensuring safety, stability and hope for their daily impact in their communities.
PFS recognizes Hailey Medina, an inspiring youth care worker whose dedication to child welfare is deeply personal. Motivated by her own family—her son on the autism spectrum and her cousin, a fellow TFI staff member—Hailey’s unwavering passion drives her to build a brighter, more supportive future for children and families everywhere.
Path to Child Welfare
Hailey’s ability to connect with children has always come naturally. Though she didn’t work in formal childcare growing up, she served as a babysitter and caregiver. Her cousin motivated her transition into child welfare with stories of meaningful work. Since joining TFI, Hailey says the journey has been “simply amazing.” Despite the tough nature of the work, she feels this is exactly where she belongs, making an impact every day.
A Defining Moment
Hailey felt a profound moment during a group activity when kids traced their hands and shared affirmations. The heartfelt words from the girls, many affectionately calling her ‘Ma,’ touched her deeply. These trusting relationships allow her to de-escalate conflicts with a caring approach, ensuring the youth feel understood and supported in their journey.
Personal Influences
While Hailey hasn’t experienced foster care herself, her personal journey as a mother and military child shaped her approach. Growing up in a stable home but yearning for emotional support, she uses those experiences to drive her work. Her mission is to uplift children and ensure they have the strength and the acknowledgment they need to thrive.
Memorable Stories
Although Hailey joined TFI in April 2025, her impact has been remarkable. Every youth she’s mentored has left a deep impression on her heart and she maintains contact with several girls who still seek her advice. To Hailey, these ongoing relationships reflect the trust and meaningful change she’s helped create.
Motivation During Tough Days
Hailey’s approach is rooted in empathy. She treats each youth with kindness, validates their feelings and encourages them to see beyond their current circumstances. She brings her true self to work every day—a belief in their potential to change their future. While some days are difficult, Hailey remains resilient. Her motivation stems from knowing the tangible difference she makes in the lives of her youth.
A simple yet powerful mantra drives her, “I don’t want to be given up on, and I won’t give up on them.”
Hailey often questions if she’s doing enough but feedback from others affirms her positive influence. She believes her love and care create a ripple effect—helping youth feel seen and supported, especially those with trauma or instability. She recognizes that her work truly matters, even if she doesn’t always see the full scope of her impact.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on her brave leap to join TFI, Hailey feels grateful for the journey. She’s inspired by future possibilities, determined to broaden her reach and progress along her rewarding professional path.
Dedicated child welfare workers like Hailey Medina lead the way in building healthier, more hopeful futures for families and children. Their daily impact is transformative and opens countless doors to opportunity.
