National Reunification Month, celebrated each June, spotlights the critical efforts and successes of reuniting children with their biological families. This month and year-round, TFI is proud to highlight the vital role of Parent Partners at TFI.
A Parent Partner at TFI is an individual who has experienced child removal and has successfully reunified with their family. They serve as mentors and advocates, offering empathy and support to families working to regain stability and reunite with their children. Their firsthand knowledge provides invaluable support to families facing similar circumstances.
Parent Partners work alongside families and caseworkers by reviewing case plans, connecting families to mental health services, transporting them to appointments and sharing their personal journeys. While their support is invaluable, the community also has a crucial role to play in promoting successful reunification.
Melissa Caldwell is a current parent partner who previously faced her own difficulties of losing custody of her children. Caldwell struggled with addiction and turned to unhealthy choices, which led to legal trouble and realized she needed to make a change. “We are a bridge between the parent and the case team, because the parents are going to look at the case team,“ she explains, encapsulating the role of Parent Partners.
With the help of caring professionals and her own commitment to better herself, Melissa began taking steps toward recovery. She participated in treatment, remained dedicated to sobriety and worked hard to rebuild her life.
Her advice to parents undergoing reunification is, “Not every day is perfect and not every day is easy. There will be tough days but as parents, we need to show our children that we can overcome even the hardest obstacles — for them.”
Community support can significantly impact the success of reunification. Here are ways you can contribute:
- Donate items! Providing furniture, clothing and household items helps create a stable environment for children and assists parents getting back on their feet.
- Show your support: Participating in support groups offers emotional encouragement and shared experiences, that can strengthen a parent’s hope.
- Volunteer your time! Whether through childcare, transportation or other forms of support, you can help ease the challenges families face on their path toward reunification.
Senior VP of Permanency Services, Tabitha Gibson emphasizes, “Every child deserves the warmth of family, which is the foundation of belonging. When safe and possible, reunification isn’t just right—it’s what works. Our role is to create opportunities for families to heal and grow together.”
We honor and celebrate the resilience of families and the compassionate professionals who advocate for the well-being and reunification of children. National Reunification Month reminds us that the strength and unity of a family are unparalleled. By working collectively, we can support the journey of families towards healing and togetherness, ensuring a brighter future for all involved.
