TFI Family Services Calls on Kansans to Join Statewide Efforts to Prevent Child Abuse This April

April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, a nationwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening the support families need to thrive. In Kansas, the need for action remains urgent. According to The Annie E. Casey Foundation, there has been a significant decrease in child abuse and neglect cases in the US thanks in large part to the preventative programs in place.

“Child abuse is preventable when communities work together,” said Donna Rozell, VP of Family Services. “Every adult has the power—and responsibility—to speak up when something feels wrong. Learning to be trauma-informed and knowing how to report concerns can save a child’s life.”

TFI encourages caregivers, neighbors, educators and community members to take simple, proactive steps recommended by Prevent Child Abuse America:

  • Be a nurturing parent: Children thrive when they feel loved, supported, and capable.
  • Lend a helping hand: Parenting is challenging. Offering support—childcare, meals, time—can relieve stress for overwhelmed families.
  • Care for yourself: Taking breaks during stressful moments helps prevent harmful reactions.
  • Learn how to respond to crying: Never shake a baby; seek support when dealing with infant frustration.
  • Get involved in your community: Advocate for programs and services that strengthen families.
  • Support local parenting resources: Encourage your local library to offer books and tools for caregivers.
  • Promote school based prevention programs: Education keeps children safer.
  • Monitor media consumption: Limit exposure to violent content.
  • Report suspected abuse or neglect to the Kansas Protection Report Center by calling 1‑800‑922‑5330

Child abuse has lifelong impacts on development, mental health and well-being. Children who have experienced abuse are more likely to suffer cognitive damage and memory issues and perform poorly in school when compared to their peers. Prevention is possible—and it begins with awareness, connection, and community action.

One way to make a difference and show support is by wearing blue on Friday, April 10th. As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month each April, everyone in the community is encouraged to wear blue as a symbol of their commitment to preventing child abuse and supporting children and families in need of help.

“Small acts of support can make a big difference,” Rozell added. “By strengthening families, we strengthen our entire community.”

TFI encourages all Kansans to stay engaged throughout April by participating in community events, sharing messages of prevention and learning how to recognize and report abuse. To learn more about TFI or our prevention programs, visit www.tfifamily.org.
