May 29 is National Heat Awareness Day
The Family Initiative (TFI) is recognizing National Heat Awareness Day by encouraging families, caregivers and community members to take proactive steps to protect children and vulnerable individuals from the dangers of extreme heat.
With rising summer temperatures across the region, TFI is highlighting the serious risks associated with heat exposure and the importance of early prevention. Children, older adults and individuals with limited access to cooling resources are especially at risk for heat-related illnesses.
“Extreme heat can become dangerous very quickly, especially for children,” said Melissa Briggs, Chief Administrative Officer at TFI. “On Heat Awareness Day, we want to remind families that simple precautions can prevent serious health risks and ensure everyone stays safe during the hottest months of the year.”
Key Heat Safety Tips for Families
TFI urges families to follow these essential safety practices:
- Stay Hydrated: Encourage children to drink water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty
- Limit Outdoor Activity: Avoid strenuous outdoor play during peak heat hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and take breaks in the shade.
- Never Leave Children in Vehicles: Temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly and become life-threatening within minutes
- Dress for the Weather: Choose lightweight, light-colored clothing to help keep cool
- Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on children, older adults and others who may need assistance staying cool
Supporting Families Through the Summer
As part of its commitment to child safety and family well-being, TFI integrates heat safety education into its ongoing support for foster, kinship and adoptive families. Staff work closely with caregivers to ensure safe environments and provide guidance on adapting daily routines during periods of extreme heat.
“Heat safety is a shared responsibility,” added Briggs. “By staying informed and prepared, we can work together to prevent heat-related emergencies and protect the well-being of children and families across our communities.”
