Kansas

Brittney and Jonathan Nelson have been passionate and dedicated foster parents for nearly two years. During this time, they have opened their hearts and home to multiple children in need, demonstrating a remarkable willingness to support children through long-term placements, short-term stays and respite care. They regularly provide respite for other foster families almost every weekend, understanding the importance of breaks and self-care for foster parents.

Nebraska

Diane Seaver has been an exceptional foster parent since she was first licensed in 2021. Over the years, she has opened her heart and home to multiple children, providing love, stability and support. Diane has also offered respite care for youth with high needs, demonstrating her dedication to children in foster care. In 2024, Diane married Dan Krueger, who has completed all necessary training and joined her on her foster care journey.

Oklahoma

The Hohn family has been dedicated foster parents since 2024. From the moment a child is placed in their home, they work tirelessly to create a nurturing, safe and loving environment where the child can flourish. They actively support the biological parents and collaborate closely with the child’s care team to ensure the child’s needs are met every day.

Texas

Since she began her journey in November 2022, Kesley has developed a strong and loving bond with the child in her care. She has been a dedicated advocate, providing the necessary services to support the child’s growth and development. Kesley consistently highlights the child’s strengths and achievements, adjusting her expectations to meet the child’s individual needs and helping him build on areas for growth. Kelsey would like to offer these helpful tips for other kinship or foster parents.

Training Corner:

The 4 types of parenting styles: What style is right for you?

There are four main parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful. You don’t have to commit to one style. It’s natural to use different styles in different situations. When safety is at stake, a parent might use a firm authoritarian style that leaves no room for negotiation. But a parent might put consequences on hold and lean into a permissive approach to encourage teenagers to call for help if they put themselves in a dangerous situation.

Recruitment Corner

The recruitment team is busy again this May. Here are some highlights:

Kansas

In Kansas, we participated in a Community Baby Shower at Crawford Mental Health in Pittsburg on May 1st. We enjoyed our Kansas Foster Family Conference in Valley Center on May 2nd and 3rd. We are so grateful to our foster parents who represented TFI at Safe Kids Day at the Topeka Zoo on May 3rd! We are looking forward to Pizza in the Park in Ottawa on May 17th. Throughout this month, we are visiting various towns in Kansas and distributing teacher appreciation baskets as the school year ends.

Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, we were part of the Iowa Tribal Fostering Fair in Tryon on May 1st. We joined the celebration at Festival of the Child in Yukon on May 3rd. We presented at the Ottawa County Shine the Light Foster Care Info Night in Miami on May 8th. We blitzed Broken Arrow with a Take It to the Streets event on May 9th. We are looking forward to hosting a Foster Fathers Breakfast in Oklahoma City on May 17th. We will be sharing at Soldier Creek Baptist Church in Midwest City on May 18th. On Memorial Day weekend, we will be active in Carlton Landing with an Outdoor Family Movie Night on May 23rd and a Memorial Day Celebration on May 24th. Then, we will close out May with a Mermaid Night Out at the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks on May 27th.

Texas

In Texas, we exhibited at the Art Walk in Wichita Falls on May 1st. We set up at the Wichita Falls Farmer’s Market on May 3rd. We spoke at the Wichita Falls City Council Meeting on May 6th. We joined the Palo Pinto Community Collaborative on May 7th. We enjoyed Park Fest in Iowa Park on May 10th. We are looking forward to the Eighter’s Food Truck Challenge in Decatur on May 17th. We will be sharing with the Greenville Kiwanis on May 20th and the Lampasas Kiwanis on May 21st. Finally, we are excited to host an Open House at 701 South St., Suite A, in Graham on May 24th.
