Just by being here today, you are engaging in something special.

Discovering the Journey of Becoming a Foster Parent In Texas

While special can make the world of difference to a child in need, sometimes the most impactful parts of assisting a child can be the most ordinary parts of life. Sitting down for breakfast in the morning, asking how their day went after school, playing soccer outside, or even helping them get ready for a birthday party. Committing to the little things, and giving a young girl or boy a leg up is one of the most sincere acts of kindness you can offer a child in need.

To ensure foster parents are equipped with more than the best of intentions, the State of Texas does pose a few requirements for those looking to get involved in the Foster Care system. Here at the Texas Family Initiative, it is our goal to help you move through these processes, knowing you have a dedicated partner alongside you preparing you for success.

Here are a few of the requirements for all Texas foster families according to the Texas Department of Family Protective Services:

Mandated Requirements

  • Potential foster parents may be single or married.
    • If married or divorced, the potential foster parent must have the properly documented paperwork.
  • Potential foster parents must be over the age of 21 at the time of application.
  • Potential foster parents need to be willing to complete a home study and background check, in addition to giving character references.
  • Potential foster parents will have to complete a free training class to better understand the needs of foster children.

Additional Requirements

  • Foster parents must be willing and able to provide adequate sleeping space for all children in the home.
  • Foster parents are required to have no more than six children in total living within the home.
  • Foster parents must adhere to a non-physical discipline structure for all children within the household.
  • Foster parents need to allow fire, health, and safety inspections of the home throughout the duration of the time children are placed in the home.
  • If foster parents have pets, all pets within the household need to be current on any necessary vaccinations.
  • Foster parents need to receive and maintain CPR and First Aid Certifications while children are placed within the home.
  • Foster parents must be tested for Tuberculosis (TB) prior to receiving a child in their home.
  • Foster parents will be required to attend training throughout the year totaling to 20 hours or more in order to have foster children in their residence.
